You can never overstate the importance of clear, concise writing in a professional or academic environment. Solid professional writing skills can give you an edge and set you apart from the crowd.
If your writing skills are lacking or you haven’t used them in a while, it can show. While you might feel some embarrassment over a small grammatical error, your ability to communicate through writing is even more important at the end of the day.
Reports and essays used on a professional level are intended for the use of others. If you are unclear in presenting your ideas or unorganized in your thoughts, your reports could be rendered useless.
How to Improve Professional Writing Skills
The best way to improve your professional writing skills is the same way you developed them in the first place. The LUX Whittier College Writing Workshop for Professionals offers you an opportunity to learn by doing. You can polish your writing skills by completing writing exercises and doing peer reviews.
While this is a Zoom-led online workshop, it is still imperative that you come prepared to participate. Participating in the workshop’s exercises and working with your peers is essential to your success. This experience is part of how you learn to apply the writing skills you acquire.
LUX Whittier College Writing Workshop for Professionals
The LUX Whittier College Writing Workshop for Professionals is taught by Dr. Ralph Isovitsch. Isovitsch has been teaching at Whittier College since 2005, where he leads organic chemistry classes and teams of student researchers.
The next course will be offered on October 17 and 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The workshop consists of two classes, one each day that lasts for about an hour and a half. The lectures will take place on Zoom.
Although this is an online course, it’s highly interactive. You will be asked to write during the workshop. Your writing will be reviewed and critiqued by both the instructor and your peers. If you already have a writing project that you are working on, feel free to bring that along to work on during the workshop.
If you aren’t currently working on a writing project, you can use prompts provided by the instructor. It is important to keep an open mind during this workshop and consider constructive criticism about your writing and style.
